I was hired by the Andy Warhol Museum to shoot a world-premiere concert event: “Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films,” at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. This photo ran alongside a review of the show in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Eleanor Friedberger is perfectly posed, and the crop on the screen lends a bit of imperfection to the ideal beauty of Edie Sedgwick.
This was easily my favorite concert of the year for 2014. Reignwolf, AKA Jordan Cook, is an incredible guitarist. He has an unbelievable intensity on stage — and off. This photo, my favorite from the night, captures him shredding in the middle of the crowd.
Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen kicked off his 2015 tour in Pittsburgh. What a voice!
Arctic Monkeys embarked on a brief tour of the midwest with White Denim. These kids in the front row had been waiting outside for hours to see their favorite band. This fan’s reaction when the Monkeys hit the stage says it all.
Steel Panther is a photographer’s dream. As part of their shtick they constantly mug and pose for the camera. And the show itself? As outrageous as those outfits.
Pittsburgh band Andre Costello and the Cool Minors had their album release show at the Andy Warhol Museum. I love the faraway gaze in Andre’s eyes. The second half of the set was performed in front of silent films from the 1950s, and I managed to catch this moment when the screen displayed a sunset. Or maybe it was a nuclear test.
Spoon visited the 100+ year old Carnegie Library of Homestead as part of their tour in support of They Want My Soul, one of my favorite albums of the year. I love the lighting in this shot, and how I was able to capture the two guitarists in tandem, with very similar poses. The only thing that would have made it better would be if Britt Daniel was in the foreground!
I put this photo of White Denim’s bass player, Steve Terebecki, on instagram with the hashtag #nofucksgiven. I shot the band again a few months later on a headlining tour and mentioned this photo to Steve. Apparently, they were all aware of – and loved – the photo, which one of guy’s wives spotted on Instagram. Now I’m known as “No Fucks Brian” to the band.
Before shooting the concert itself, The Andy Warhol Museum asked me to photograph rehearsals for “Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films.” This photo of Eleanor Friedberger, performing in front of an Edie Sedgwick screen test, was used in Billboard for a preview of the event. Being able to sit in on rehearsals with Dean Wareham and Eleanor Friedberger is something I won’t soon forget.
I love being able to accompany my articles with my own photos. This piece is from an article I wrote for Next Pittsburgh on “New Traditional” barber shops, places you can get a straight-razor shave along with a new-school, contemporary haircut.
I took this photo of Chancellor Warhol as part of a shoot for Big Hassle Media prior to Chance’s performance at his namesake’s museum.
This photo accompanied my Next Pittsburgh article on the Steel City Grammers, a local Instagram group whose grown to such stature that local museums invite them in to shoot after hours.
